One of our recent lessons in Science focused on the importance of recycling. In our community, it is important to reuse products and recycle products in order to reduce the pollution in our air and environment. We read the book "An Artist' America" by Michael Albert in order to discover one way that we can reuse household items. Michael Albert uses household items to create his own style of art. One example of a household item that he uses is cereal boxes.
After reading the book by Michael Albert, the students used cutouts from cereal boxes (and other food supplies) to spell out their Spelling words for the week. Normally, we use paper that contains letter tiles to spell out our Spelling words. Instead the students reused house hold items in order to reduce the amount of paper we were using.
The students really seemed to enjoy this activity! Some students even brought in their Doritos bags into the classroom to "reuse" for more words after snack. This has also helped the students to recognize what they can and cannot recycle in our recycling bin according to Baldwin County's list of items that can be recycled.
